How to Find Your Authenticator Setup Key

Written by Tome Gavazov

When connecting your Upwork account to Lancer with 2-Factor Authentication enabled, you'll need your authenticator setup key. This is the setup key that was shown to you when you first set up your authenticator app on Upwork.

If you still have the key saved somewhere, you can enter it directly. Some authenticator apps also let you export or view your saved keys (for example, Google Authenticator lets you export accounts under Settings > Transfer accounts).

That said, the easiest way is to simply disconnect your authenticator on Upwork and set it up again. During the setup, Upwork will show you a fresh key that you can copy and paste into Lancer.

Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Go to your Upwork security settings

Open your Upwork security settings by visiting:

Step 2: Disconnect your current authenticator app

Under "Two-Step verification", find the "Authenticator App codes" option and click to disable or disconnect it.

You may be asked to confirm this action with your password or a verification code.

Step 3: Re-enable the authenticator app

Once disconnected, click to set up the authenticator app again. Upwork will show you a QR code and a setup key.

Important: Copy the setup key (the text code, not the QR code). This is what you'll paste into Lancer.

Step 4: Complete the setup in your authenticator app

Scan the QR code or enter the setup key in your authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, etc.) to finish the setup on Upwork. Enter the 6-digit code from your app to confirm.

Step 5: Enter the setup key in Lancer

After you have finished enabling the authenticator app on Upwork, go back to Lancer and paste the setup key into the "Your authenticator setup key" field when connecting your account.

šŸŽ‰ That's it. Lancer will use this key so your account stays connected without interruptions.
